African Bread Sculpture

This sculpture is one of my favorite projects I made in culinary school. It is completely made of ingredients you would make bread. I was inspired to make it African themed this by a piece of fabric I saw at JoAnns. The pattern was actually traced over the fabric and enlarged them on a copy machine to the appropriate size.

Dough Recipe:
  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Salt
  • 4 Tablespoons of Oil
  • 1 cup of water
  • Food Coloring/Cocoa Powder
Mix the dry ingredients in a saucepanWhisk in the water over low heat and add in the oil.Continue to mix over low heat until it forms a dough texture. Split up the dough, and knead in the food color (when it’s cool enough to touch.) Roll out the dough, cut out shapes and bake at 250 degrees to dry them out without browning or burning them.

The organic look of the colors (browns, yellows, greens, red and orange) were actually made from dehydrated carrots, spinach, beets, and tomatoes. Ah culinary school, how I miss you.

     The finished Project.
