Easy Rag Quilt

I wanted to make a rag quilt because I LOVED the idea of finishing a quilt in one day. So the thing about that... I was able to finish the sewing in one day, but I fear I will be cutting the frays for the rest of my life!!!

I made up the pattern for this quilt and accuracy is the key to a uniform look.

For this project you will need:

Two 2 yard pieces of fabric
One 4 yard piece for the front and the entire back of the quilt
4 yards of flannel to use as batting
Scissors
Rotary cutter

Line up the edges neatly and trim off any selvage. If you are using 45'' fabric make sure you cut them all to match the smallest piece (mine were 44'' after cutting off the selvage.) Now cut the fabric into strips that are 4 inched wide and 72 inches long (2 yards.)

Cut matching size pieces of the flannel to go inside.
Make "sandwiches" by layering a back piece, flannel in the middle and a top piece. Sew to sandwiches together leaving 1/2 inch seams to later be frayed.
I recommend ironing in between to help the fabric lay down

better, but you don't have to. You may find it helpful to lay out the sandwiches pre-made in order of the pattern. Its less confusing and helped me visualize the project better.

Continue sewing until you get it to the desirable size, mine ended up being 21 rows which is 63'' by 72''.

Its not as heavy as a batting filled quilt but it does make an excellent TV watching blanket.

  The finished look.

  1. How did you do the frayed part? How long did it take? It looks great! I love the fabrics you chose. I think I might try one, maybe a small one for my daughter

  2. The frayed part was done by hand-cutting all the little strips. It took about an hour and a half total. I decided to space it out over a few days as my hands got really tired. ;)
