I'm 99% sure that almost every woman on pinterest is OBSESSED with board and batten. Can I get a (simultaneous shoulder raise) What-What!?! If you have the itch for B&B I'm here to help you decide that yes, you need this in your life.
And did I mention I was able to complete this project for under $50?! Well, I was.
Here's what I used:
- 9 Painted particle board trimming: 2.5 inch and 2- 3.5 inch pieces - $42
- Painters Frog tape - $7
- Cream paint (on hand for touching up the trim)
- Nail gun and nails (on hand)
- Saw (on hand)
- Spackle (on hand)
- Painting rollers and brushes (on hand)
Now, if you don't have these items on hand it would obviously cost more. But for those of you who do or know someone that would let you borrow, it is an easy project.
Luckily for me I have my hunky assistant to help me with all of the heavy lifting...
and measuring,
and cutting,
and more measuring,
and nail gunning,
and caulking.
Start by creating a "frame" and make sure it's level. Be sure to nail to as many studs as possible for more support.
Lay out the boards and measure the distance between each to make sure they are evenly spaced. This was seriously the hardest part. Mostly because you are dealing with sixteenths of an inch and don't forget about the A/C, sockets and switches.
Using white silicone, line all of the inner and outer corners. pay attention to this HUGE TIP: Use a wet index finger to smooth the line, watch this. "WOW. that's a perfect bead..." That guy cracks me up. This is seriously how the professionals do it.
Finally, fill in all of the nail holes with filler and wait to sand down once it dries. Once the caulk to completely dry, tape off the outer edges for painting. I ended up doing three coats of paint to make sure I was able to get a thick coat over the dark existing wall.

Board and batten is the perfect way to add a lighter tones without committing to painting an entire wall floor to ceiling.
Where did you get your table and chairs at? I love them!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I got them at a store called Down East. I'm not sure if they are Utah thing or nation wide?
ReplyDeleteWe are thinking of doing this in our house, but our walls are textured. Are yours? Did you run into any issues or is it noticeable with the end result? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAndrea,
ReplyDeleteGreat question! Our walls are textured, its called old world. I just painted over all of it and its not as noticeable as I thought it would be when I initially planned this project. Looking back at the way it was, it looks like it was always missing that accent. I hope this was helpful to you! Good luck!
I love how easy you make this look..I feel like this might cause me to have a nervous breakdown. JK It is seriously gorgeous. I love how dramatically different the before and after is. It REALLY gave your dining room some extra panache. http://lookbylizlewis.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThank you Liz! I will definitely check out your blog!
DeleteWhat is the height? I'm getting ready to do this in my house and I can't quite decide what height is right.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
This was about 5 feet tall.
DeleteDoes the particle board stick out farther than the baseboard where they meet?
ReplyDeleteYes it did. We mitered the edges to make it less obvious. Like the picture here
